Talk to strangers apps in India: an honest guide

Looking for a talk to strangers app in India? Here is what actually works in 2026, which random chat apps to skip, and how to stay safe while you talk.

If you are in India and want an app to talk to strangers, here is the short answer. For talking about a shared interest, Discord servers and Reddit communities are free and usually decent. For meeting new people in a live room, pick a chat room app that verifies its users, so the person you are talking to is a real adult with something to lose. What I would skip are the random video chat apps that match you with anyone, with no sign-up and no checks. They are the closest thing to the old Omegle, and they have the same problems: bots, scams and people you cannot report in any way that matters. Below is how I would choose, where my own app fits, and where it does not.

Who is writing this

I built a chat app called Hashti. I am Armenian-Iranian and I live in Los Angeles. I am not going to pretend I know Mumbai or Chennai from the inside, and I am not going to tell you which app every college student in Bangalore uses this month. That changes too fast, and I would be guessing.

What I do know is what makes a stranger chat app good or bad. I spent a long time looking at the ones that failed before I built mine. The patterns are the same in every country. So this is a guide, not an ad, and in a few places the honest answer is "use something else."

What people in India usually want from a stranger chat app

When someone searches for a talk to strangers app in India, they usually mean one of these:

  • Someone new to talk to, because the people around you are the same every day.
  • A place to practise English, or to talk in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi or another language with people who are not your family.
  • A room about something specific, like cricket, coding, exams, films or moving abroad.
  • People from other countries, to hear how life looks somewhere else.

Each of those points to a different kind of app. There is no single best one.

The main options, honestly

WhatsApp and Telegram groups

WhatsApp is how most of India already talks. It is excellent for people you know. It is weak for people you don't. Groups are joined by invite link, so public links get passed around, and many open groups fill up with spam, forwards and people selling something. Your phone number is also visible to everyone in a WhatsApp group, which matters a lot when the group is full of strangers.

Telegram lets you hide your number and search for public groups, which makes it better for meeting new people. The catch is moderation. A big Telegram group is only as good as its admins. Be very careful with anyone who moves you from a group into private messages to talk about jobs abroad, crypto, trading tips or "work from home" earnings. That pattern is one of the most common scams anywhere.

Discord servers

Discord is free and built around servers with topic channels and voice channels. There are Indian servers for gaming, programming, study groups, anime and general chat. If you want to talk with people about a real interest, Discord is often the best free option.

It is confusing at first, and every server runs itself. Some are kind and well moderated. Some are not. You will need to try a few.

Reddit

Reddit has communities for India, for individual cities and for Indians abroad. It is better for discussion than for live chat. Good for honest answers about colleges, visas or jobs. Not really a place to talk back and forth in real time.

Random video chat apps

These are the apps that promise to connect you with a stranger on camera in one tap. Omegle was the famous one, and it shut down in 2023. Many apps took its place, and new ones appear all the time.

My opinion: most of them are not worth it. The reasons are always the same.

  • No real identity. Anyone can open ten accounts. Bans do nothing, because a banned person comes back in a minute.
  • Bots and paid hosts. On many of these apps, a lot of the "strangers" are bots, or people paid to keep you talking so you buy coins or gifts.
  • Screen recording and blackmail. On camera with a stranger, you have no control over what they record. Sextortion scams that start on random video chat are a real and documented problem in India and elsewhere.

If you do use one, never show your face together with anything that identifies you, never move to another app because a stranger asks, and never send money to anyone you met there.

Chat room apps with public rooms

The last group is apps with public rooms that have names and topics. You walk into a room about cricket or language practice and talk with whoever is there. You can leave anytime. This is closer to the old chat rooms than to random matching, and I think it is a healthier way to meet people, because the topic gives everyone a reason to be there.

The thing to check is whether the app knows who its users are.

Where Hashti fits

Hashti is my app, so read this part knowing that.

Hashti is a free chat app for adults, 18 and over. It is out now on the App Store. Android is in a closed test, so if you are on an Android phone, which most people in India are, it is not ready for you yet. That is a real limit and I would rather say it plainly.

Here is what it has:

  • Public rooms with names and topics, which you can browse on the Hashti rooms page.
  • Private chats, calls and a walkie-talkie for when you want to keep talking with someone one to one.
  • Identity checks. Each account is checked once against a government document. The photo is deleted after the check. A fingerprint of the document stays, so the same document cannot open a second account. Unverified accounts cannot host rooms, speak in voice rooms or message strangers.
  • Reports that matter. Twelve verified reports close an account permanently. Because a person cannot simply open a new account with the same document, a ban actually sticks. You can read more on the Hashti safety page.
  • Live translation in 29 languages, so you can talk with someone who writes in a language you do not read. Translation is part of Hashti Plus, which costs $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year. Everything else is free.

The app's own buttons and menus are in English today. A Farsi interface is being built. There is no Hindi interface, and I will not promise one I have not built.

Hashti is not a dating app, and it is not a place to find a partner. It is for conversation. If that is not what you want, it is the wrong app for you, and that is fine.

How I would choose

Here is the honest version.

  • You want to talk about one specific interest: try Discord first. It is free, works on Android and has many Indian communities.
  • You want discussion and advice: Reddit.
  • You want to meet new people in a live room, and you have an iPhone: try a verified chat room app. That can be Hashti, or another app that checks identity. The verification is the part that matters most.
  • You want random video chat: I would not. If you must, protect yourself as if every call were being recorded, because some are.
  • You are on Android and want a verified room app today: Hashti is not there yet. Use Discord in the meantime.

How to stay safe on any stranger chat app

These rules work everywhere, on every app, including mine.

1. Keep your phone number private until you trust someone, and even then think twice. 2. Do not move to another app because a stranger asks. Scammers move you to a place with fewer protections. 3. Never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you met online. Not for an emergency, not for a visa fee, not for an investment. 4. Be careful on camera. Assume anything you show can be recorded. 5. Report and block early. You do not owe a stranger a second chance. 6. Use apps that verify adults. An app that does not know who its users are cannot protect you from them.

A short word on why I built this

I grew up in a community spread across many countries. Iranians and Armenians abroad lived in chat rooms for years, and those rooms were how a lot of us found each other. Then the rooms got overrun by fake accounts and nobody could tell who was real.

Indians abroad, and Indians at home looking for someone new to talk to, have the same need. You want to talk to real people who get your jokes, your language and your cricket opinions, and you do not want to be scammed while you do it. Whatever app you pick, pick one that takes that seriously.

Get Hashti on the App Store

Hashti is free, and it is 18+. Hashti Plus — live translation, writing help and catch-ups — is $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year, and nothing else costs anything. How rooms work is on the rooms page, and how reports and the ID check work is on the safety page.
