The rules

Hashti is for talking to people. These are the lines, and they are not negotiable.

Removed immediately, permanently:

Anything sexual involving a minor, in any form, including drawings and text.
Threats of violence against a person or a place.
Sharing someone's private information — address, phone number, workplace — without their consent.
Encouraging someone to hurt themselves.

Removed, with a suspension:

Harassment: following someone between rooms, repeated unwanted contact, organising a pile-on.
Hate: attacking people for their race, religion, nationality, disability, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation.
Sexual content in a room that has not said it is for that, and sexual advances towards someone who has not invited them.
Impersonating a real person or organisation.
Scams, phishing, and bulk unsolicited links.

You must be 17 or older to use Hashti.

Everyone here is owed respect. That is the whole rule the others come from.

One person, one account

You verify who you are with a government document — a passport, a driving licence or a national ID card — once. Until you do, you can talk with your friends and take part in rooms; messaging or calling people you do not know, hosting, speaking on voice, money and posting for everyone wait for it. Some servers ask for it before anything at all.

We do not keep the document. What we keep is a one-way fingerprint of it, which is enough to recognise the same document again and useless to anybody who steals it.

That fingerprint is why one person gets one verified account. It is also why a removal is final: the same document is refused for good, whatever email address, phone number, or Apple or Google account comes with it.

Twelve reports and you are gone

If twelve different verified members report the same account, that account is closed permanently — automatically, without waiting for a moderator, and without an appeal to a moderator. Reports a moderator has already dismissed as false do not count, and twelve accounts belonging to one person count as one.

Say that plainly to yourself before you type something to somebody here: twelve people who do not know each other, all deciding you are not welcome, is the end of your account. There is no second account afterwards.

If you believe it was wrong, appeal it at /appeal. You do not need to be able to sign in to do that — which is the point. A person reads every one. Do not make another account while you wait: that is its own reason to refuse.

You cannot delete your account to escape this. Once enough people have reported you that it is being looked at, deleting is refused — appeal instead. Below that, leaving is always yours to do.

Reporting someone

Report people who break the rules. Do not report people you disagree with, and do not organise other people to report someone. Reporting as a group to remove somebody you dislike is itself a reason to lose your own account, and it is visible to us: every report has a name on it.

The filter, and strikes

Every message, post and direct message is read by a filter before it goes anywhere. It reads what you actually typed — spacing a word out, swapping letters for numbers and full-width characters all fold back to the same word.

Ordinary swearing goes through with the word covered. A room can ask for it to be refused instead, and the host decides that for their own room.
Slurs are refused. Not covered, not delivered and reported afterwards — the room does not see them.
Threats, and anything involving a child are refused and count four times over.

A refusal is a strike, and you are told every time: which one it was, and how many are left. Two warnings, then an hour without posting, then a day, then a week, then the account is closed. A slur counts double. Strikes stop counting after 90 days.

Nothing about this is a judgement call, and none of it waits for a moderator. If you think a strike was wrong, report it and a person will look.

How this is enforced

Every message, room, profile, post and direct message has a report button.
A person reviews every report within 24 hours. Reports about a child's safety or someone in danger go to the front of the queue.
An automatic filter blocks the worst content outright and flags the rest for review. It is a filter, not a judge — a human decides.
The result: nothing, content removed, a suspension, or the account removed for good.
A removed account cannot be reopened, and the ID, phone number, email, and Apple or Google account on it cannot be used again. Support handles those, and only support can reverse one.
Hosts moderate their own rooms — mute, remove, ban — and that is independent of anything the platform does.

If you host a room

You are responsible for what happens in your room. That means:

Setting rules and enforcing them, or handing the room to someone who will.
Not recording people without telling them. The app will not let you do it quietly, and working around that is a reason to lose the account.
Not using the room to advertise something you have not disclosed.

If you take money

Tips, paid rooms and subscriptions come with obligations:

Deliver what you said you would. A paid room that never happens is a refund.
The platform keeps 15%; the rest is yours.
You verify your identity before money leaves the platform.
You are responsible for your own tax.

Your content

You keep everything you write and upload. You give the service permission to store it and show it to the people you sent it to — no more than that. It is not licensed to anyone else, sold, or used to train anything.

Ending it

You can delete your account at any time, from Settings. It is immediate.

The service can remove an account that breaks the rules above. A removal for a first-time, non-severe breach can be appealed by replying to the notification.

No warranty

This is software, and software breaks. It is provided as-is. Do not use it as the only place that something you cannot afford to lose is stored.
