Delete your Hashti account

This is how an account on Hashti — the chatroom app on the App Store and Google Play — is deleted, what goes with it, and the little that stays. Deleting is immediate and permanent; there is no waiting period and no way back.

In the app

  1. Open Hashti and go to Settings.
  2. Tap Delete my account.
  3. Confirm with your password — or, for an account made with a phone number, with the code texted to that number.

That is all. The account and everything listed below are removed the moment you confirm.

Without the app

If you cannot open the app any more, write to hashti.app@gmail.com from the email address on the account, or give your username and the phone number the account was made with. A person deletes it by hand within 30 days and replies once it is done. Nobody will ask you for your password.

What is deleted

  • Your account: username, password, the fingerprint of your phone number, your Apple or Google sign-in, two-step PIN, email address, date of birth, and every device that was signed in.
  • Your identity check: the fingerprint of your document and the name, date of birth and issuing country read from it. (The photo of the document was already deleted the moment it was reviewed.)
  • Your profile: display name, picture, bio, status, interests, theme, nicknames, notes and saved replies.
  • What you wrote and sent: messages, private messages, posts, questions, reactions, voice notes, photos, videos and files — the files themselves as well as the rows, so old links stop working.
  • Rooms you own, with their stickers; a private conversation you started passes to the other person in it rather than vanishing from under them.
  • Your connections: friends, follows, blocks, group memberships and the contact-matching hashes, if you had turned matching on.
  • Money: your coin transactions and the record of your Hashti Plus subscription. The subscription itself is with Apple, Google or Stripe: cancel it there first (Manage subscription in Settings takes you to the right place), because deleting the account does not stop the store from renewing it.

What is kept, and for how long

  • Something of yours that was reported and not yet reviewed — a message or a picture — stays, with your name taken off it, until a moderator decides, and is deleted then. Everything else goes at once.
  • Copies other people hold. A message somebody forwarded, or a photo they saved, is theirs; deleting your account cannot reach into their phone.
  • If the account was closed by Hashti for breaking the rules rather than by you, two things stay for good: the fingerprint of the identity document, so the same document cannot open a new account, and the record of why it was closed, under the old username so nobody else can be mistaken for you. Deleting an account yourself keeps neither.
  • The launch list on this website is separate from the app: an address left here is deleted once the one launch email has gone out, or sooner if you write to hashti.app@gmail.com.

When deleting has to wait

An account that enough people have reported to be halfway to removal, or that has enough strikes from the filter to be halfway there, cannot be deleted while that is being looked at — otherwise deleting would be the way out of a decision rather than a way of leaving. The app says so when you try. Strikes stop counting after 90 days; a report is decided by a person within a day, and you can appeal a decision without signing in.

Delete less than everything

  • A message, a post or a picture can be deleted in the app for you or for everyone; the file goes with it and any link to it stops working. Replacing your profile picture deletes the old one.
  • Contact matching — Settings → Safety — switching it off deletes the stored hashes at once. Matching is off unless you turn it on.
  • Apple or Google sign-in can be taken off the account in Settings, which deletes the id that company gave Hashti for you.
  • Devices — Settings shows every device signed in, and any of them can be signed out. A device unused for 31 days is forgotten on its own.
  • Disappearing messages delete themselves from the server when their time is up, and a view-once photo, video or voice note is deleted once everyone it was sent to has opened it.
  • Everything the account holds can be downloaded first, as JSON: Settings → Safety → Download my data.
