How it works

One setting. Then nothing to do.

Somebody writes in Spanish; you read it in English; the person next to you reads it in Persian. Each of you sees the message in your own language the moment it lands, and "Translated from Spanish · See original" underneath it.

  • Rooms and private chats alike, the history you open as well as what arrives while you are there.
  • Edited, translated again. A message that changes gets a fresh translation; a deleted one takes its translations with it.
  • Already in your language? Then nothing changes, and nothing is sent anywhere.
  • On tap, for everyone. Even with live translation off, any single message can be translated with a tap.

What goes where. A message you can already see, to Anthropic's model, to be translated — and never a secret chat, never a message from somebody either of you blocked. The translation is kept with the message for everyone reading in that language, so it is made once, and it is deleted when the message is. It is all in the privacy notice.

About translation

Is the translation any good?
It is done by an AI model that keeps the tone — slang stays slang, a joke stays a joke, and names, @handles and links stay exactly as they are. It can still be wrong, which is why the original is always one tap away and marked with the language it was written in.
Does it cost anything?
Not to you. Translation is a running cost for whoever runs the server, so a busy day has a budget; past it, messages stay as they were written until the next day.
Can the person I am talking to tell?
No. The translation is made for you and the other people reading in your language; the writer sees their message as they wrote it, and nothing tells them it was translated.
What is never translated?
Secret chats — the server cannot read them, so it cannot translate them. Messages from somebody you blocked, or who blocked you. Your own messages. Stickers, links and emoji on their own. And a translation that would say something the filter would not let anybody type is not shown at all.
